Pitch-Perfect Patagonian Pinot
A thousand kilometers away from Mendoza, 3,000 feet closer to sea level than that famed Argentine wine region, sits the Rio Negro Valley. Most wine lovers have never had a wine from Rio Negro and many never will—but those who get the chance will immediately grasp why we wish every wine lover could take a sip of Patagonian Pinot Noir.
Patagonia is the one wine region of Argentina where cool-climate Pinot Noir thrives. Pounded by high winds and whipsawed by wide ranging daily temperatures, the region is so remote that wineries struggle to find enough people to harvest their grapes. But the Pinot is fabulous, and we’re always thrilled when a gorgeous example arrives stateside: One like the 2019 Bodega del Rio Elorza Verum Pinot Noir Alto Valley del Rio Negro Patagonia.
Vibrant, bright, and focused, this bottle from a stalwart Patagonia winery vibrates with the intensity of Patagonia’s unyielding climate and offers a gorgeous entree to the burgeoning wine region that is perfect for Pinot Noir. From the delicate ruby-garnet color to the red fruit aromas and layers of power and acidity, it shows exactly why we wish more Pinot from this undersung region made it into our glasses.
In 2001, the Del Río Elorza family purchased an estate in Colonia Lucinda de Fernández Oro in Alto Valle in the Province of Río Negro, and planted their vineyards with specially selected Pinot Noir clones.
Crafted by internationally renowned winemakers Hans Vinding-Diers and local Agustín Lombroni, this is Patagonia captured in a bottle of Pinot Noir—and a can’t-miss for anyone serious about red wine.
