A Prized Terroir and a Gifted Consultant Cause a Stir
Meticulous vineyard work, hand-sorting after harvest, and vinification of each plot separately: The standards at this 17-hectare vineyard and winery in one of Chianti Classico’s original four villages, Gaiole, are as high as any in the world. It’s a magical terroir too, once a component of Castello di Ama’s top wines until they sold it to Bertinga’s founders in 2015.
Sassi Chiusi is Bertinga’s drink-now wine, following closely behind their $70+ flagship, and the 2019 is a marvel. It’s redolent of black plum, redcurrants, and blackberry, with savory tones of aged tobacco, worn leather, and dusty earth speaking clearly of the Tuscan landscape with its dried herbs and licorice tones.
Aged for 18 months in the cellar and another year in the bottle before release, this wine is a PHENOMENAL buy—even better at the case price—and it will continue to improve for a decade or more. Bring on the wild boar ragù with pappardelle!
