Baracchi’s Ace-in-the-Hole

Baracchi has an ace-in-the-hole: Stefano Chioccioli.

He’s one of Tuscany’s most decorated winemakers: His bottles have impressed both Robert Parker and Wine Spectator to the tune of 100-point scores and he’s earned more than 70 Tre Bicchieri awards—an honor many vintners would be thrilled to receive just once.

That’s made Baracchi’s reds some of the most popular in Wine Access history, but we’ve never had the chance to offer one of their best values and most captivating bottles: the single-vineyard Smeriglio Sangiovese. The 93-point 2019 is sourced entirely from their San Martino estate vineyard, raised entirely in barriques for a full year, and comes from one of Tuscany’s top vintages of the decade.

Nestled in the picturesque hills of eastern Tuscany, Baracchi stands as a shining example of Cortona's burgeoning wine scene. Cortona is blessed with an ideal climate for growing powerful reds—but since it's a full hour east of Chianti and off the beaten path for most wine lovers, prices are much lower than they should be.

While much of the area is known for powerful Super Tuscans—boldy dark-fruited Syrah, in particular, seems to excel here—the Sangiovese that Baracchi grows is fantastic, especially if you like it on the powerful, dark-fruited, lush side of things.

Their Smeriglio is the shining example of that style. 100% Sangiovese, it’s grown entirely on Baracchi’s San Martino Vineyard. This is the closest vineyard to their winery, where sandy soils and their excellent drainage create beautiful aromatics and elegant textures to balance out the natural richness of the wines from Cortona.
