Tuscan Ingenuity Meets Napa Mountaintop Excellence

The Antinori family doesn’t settle for good wine. Or great wine. The legendary Tuscan family is out for pure excellence—and they’ve hit the mark for 26 generations. So when they set their sights on three small blocks of Atlas Peak Chardonnay, we already knew they’d come away with a richly complex, wonderfully balanced bottle.

With the 2019 Antica A26, Marchese Piero Antinori pairs Napa’s mountaintop opulence with classic Old World elegance. They only produce the wine in great vintages, and 2019 gave them rich fresh and baked fruit, plus hints of spice, crushed stones, and yellow flowers—all framed by modest oak. Jeb Dunnuck said it “offers another level of richness and depth.”

Piero spent over 50 years leading the Antinori estate, and he loved only a few wines enough to put his John Hancock on the label—including Guado Al Tasso, Matarocchio, Solaia, Tignanello…and this Chardonnay.

The name A26 represents the family’s 26 generations of winemaking tradition. In Italy, the Antinoris pioneered the Super Tuscan style by challenging the traditional classification system. Since then, they’ve sought vineyards that can produce the same revolutionary quality. On Atlas Peak, they planted Chardonnay in well-draining, loamy soil on their property’s lower slopes. Thanks to the fog, the nights are cooler here than higher up. That accentuates elegance and acidity, while afternoons above the fog line provide plenty of sunlight to develop rich flavor.

The A26 Chardonnay is grown on just three of the vineyard’s 50 blocks. Using only the free-run juice, they ferment in 100% new French oak barrels and age the wine sur lie for ten months, with minimal malolactic fermentation. The result is creamy and vibrant, rich and energetic—a stunning mountain Chardonnay.
