Pinot at Half of Russian River’s “Minimum” Price
Coming in with the kind of stacked list of credentials that typically sends Pinot Noir prices skyward, the 2019 Angeline is a tantalizing California Pinot bargain. Top Russian River Valley sources, 100-point winemaking talent, and critical acclaim come together here in a downright delicious Pinot that we’d call overdelivering even at $30. But we’ve got it for half that.
Benham’s long history in the Russian River region allows him to source stellar fruit from this world-famous Pinot Noir appellation, where a cool ocean-influenced climate and unique Goldridge soils have inspired winemakers and Pinot growers for generations. Leveraging his influence, Benham has tapped into excellent sites (which are under NDA lock and key), accessing Russian River’s coveted terroir without the typical accompanying prices.
The promise of the stellar fruit is realized by Benham’s super-talented winemaking duo of Talley alum Leslie Renaud and consultant Keith Emerson, who achieved perfect-score fame at Vineyard 29. The temperate 2019 growing season provided the pair with grapes that had plenty of time to ripen, developing a rich depth of flavor. After hand-picking and destemming, they gave the wine 12 months in 40% new French oak, imbuing it with warm spice notes.
From the land where Pinot prices soar, Courtney Benham has once again hit a home run. This bottle makes it possible to enjoy top Pinot Noir and the artistry of esteemed winemakers, any (and every) night of the week.
