A Vineyard Chiseled into the Basalt
The 2019 Anderson Family Vineyard Chardonnay Dundee Hills is a must-try for lovers of world-class Chardonnay, offering the vibrant fruit character of Oregon with the focused acidity and complexity of fine Burgundy—at a fraction of the price.
Anderson Family Vineyard—along with luminaries like Domaine Drouhin and Domaine Serene—is a testament to the Dundee Hills’ potential for producing exceptional Chardonnay. Cliff and Allison Anderson's quest for the perfect vineyard site led them to this steep massif of broken basalt, an ancient landslide that provides the crucial drainage so vital to producing great wines. They planted their vineyard—or rather “chiseled” it in—in 1992, so by 2019 those vines were nearly 30 years old and in their prime.
Organically farmed, and crafted in small lots using native yeasts, this Chardonnay embodies the Anderson Family's commitment to quality and terroir expression. The 2019 vintage, characterized by its cool conditions, has yielded a wine of remarkable precision and elegance.
Decanter awarded this wine an impressive 96 points, praising its “electric and elegant” palate with “flavours of lemon verbena, peach skin, smoky grilled lemon peel and flint dominating the lengthy concentrated mineral finish.” The cool vintage harmonizes beautifully with the intense character of the Anderson Family’s old-vine fruit, giving this Chardonnay exceptional depth and complexity.
With its vibrant acidity, rich texture, and layered flavors, this Chardonnay showcases why the Willamette Valley is rapidly gaining recognition as a world-class region for the variety. It’s a great alternative to much more expensive Burgundy, delivering a similar level of sophistication and refinement.
