A Picture of Structure and Precision

Americans might not know Woodlands’ outstanding Margaret River Cabernets very well.

The judges at Australia’s wine-industry-famous Cape Mentelle Cabernet tasting do.

Cape Mentelle, an international blind-tasting of Cabernet-based wines that’s been going on for four decades, is where Woodlands has bested the likes of Haut-Brion, Pichon-Longueville, Sassicaia, Leoville-Las-Cases, Spottswoode, Ornellaia, and others.

That track record is why Woodlands wines rarely make their way outside of Oz—and why we’re thrilled to have an allocation of their stunning 2018 Clémentine. Grown in Wilyabrup, which Decanter called “The Pauillac of The Margaret River,” it boasts a stunning 96-point score and shows exactly why Margaret River is ground-zero for Cabernet value.

Western Australia’s Margaret River belongs in the pantheon of the world’s greatest winegrowing regions. Wine Spectator has even said the area’s best Cabernets stand “in the top rank of the world.”

Woodlands is one of Western Australia’s pioneering wineries, and Vinous says it belongs “among Margaret River’s finest, producing some of the best Bordeaux-style red wines of Australia.”

Back in 1973, most people traveled to Margaret River for three things: surfing the breakers off Gnarabup, spelunking the local caves, or horseback riding on the beach—but David and Heather Watson came to the region to plant Cabernet and other Bordeaux varieties. They chose the village of Wilyabrup for its direct sun exposure and gravelly riverbed soil.

Today, the Watsons’ sons Andrew and Stuart run the show. They drew this blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Malbec, 13% Merlot, 11% Petit Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc from their organically farmed Woodlands Brook Vineyard. After resting for 16 months in second- and third-use French oak, the wine emerged as a wonderfully structured, 96-point classic.
