From a German Grand Cru, a Riesling of Pure Delight

As impactful as a thunderbolt, as easy to drink as lemonade in the summer, and as detailed as a Seurat painting, the 2018 Spreitzer Riesling Kabinett Lenchen shows why Riesling from Germany’s Rheingau region has been prized for a thousand years.

German Riesling is world renowned, and Rheingau is a part of the Riesling aristocracy. It’s home to the two oldest operating wineries in Germany, and its wines have long been prized for their exceptional combination of power and precision.

The Spreitzer family has been making wine here since 1641, and that history and tradition permeates every drop they produce from their small, hallowed hillside.

With perfectly exposed south-facing slopes overlooking the Rhine River, the Lenchen Vineyard is classified as Grosse Lage—the Rheingau’s equivalent of Grand Cru. Here, the grapes receive just enough sun to ripen to perfection over the course of a long, cool growing season.

The winery takes Lenchen’s immaculate grapes and presses them as whole bunches to keep the wine delicate and free from tannic astringency. After a long fermentation driven by native yeasts, Spreitzer employs extended lees aging to guard against oxidation. Aging in large casks (1000 liters and larger) allows the wine to unwind, making for an ageworthy bottle that’s also fantastic at the table today.

This resulting wine is just off-dry, with a touch of sugar enhancing its delectable fruit and balancing the bright finish—as classic as it gets for German Riesling.
