The Vineyard that Silenced the Skeptics

Skeptics told the Amadio family they couldn’t plant Cabernet in the Adelaide Hills. For a variety that often likes warmth, the cool climate and elevation just wouldn’t work, they said.

But the family knew that the property’s north-facing, slightly warmer plots were a Cabernet paradise. So they didn’t listen—and we couldn’t be happier. Because without their trailblazing spirit, we wouldn’t have the aromatic, layered 2018 The Messenger Cabernet Sauvignon 614 from the Kersbrook Vineyard.

Turns out these emerald hillsides in South Australia are prime territory for complex, vivacious Cabernet. Just like Napa’s mountainside sites, Kersbrook Vineyard has enough sun to develop ripeness and concentration, yet enough elevation and maritime influence to maintain cleansing acidity. That combination has made it a go-to source for Penfolds’ iconic Bin Series and other prestigious bottlings.

This isn’t news to The Messenger winemaker Rob McDonald. He grew up in Adelaide Hills and co-founded the legendary Old Bridge Cellars—an import business for some of Australia’s most revered estates—garnering special mention from Robert Parker himself.

For this 614, Rob knew he wanted Block 1A, which is planted to an early-ripening Cabernet clone that yields intensity and tight-knit tannins. The result is a dark, silky wine that mingles aromas of plum with lilac, baking spice, and espresso. It all previews a palate of chocolate-covered cherry and savory herbs in perfect balance with refreshing acidity. And the unique addition of 5% Sagrantino lends inky color and an intriguing spice character.

Rob’s team picked at night, when acidity is most vibrant, from several mini-lots, and then he showed off his blending prowess. After 18-24 months in new and used French oak, the result is an integrated, complex, seamless Cabernet.
