A Bastion of Tradition Since 1871

Gathered around the tasting table at our Napa office, we fell hard for the 2018 San Silvestro Patres Barolo the minute we caught our first whiff. Not only was the wine a unanimous YES, but more than one of the unrepentant Nebbiolo-hounds at the table vowed to down it with gusto, proclaiming, “I will drink that ALL day long.”

At this price point, it’s near-impossible to find Barolo with this level of complexity. Expressive and elegant, this is your new weeknight Barolo—and you can be sure we’ll be popping bottles too.

Once they tasted it, our members agreed, with one five-star reviewer raving, “Perhaps one of the best wines I’ve ever had. Complex flavors, warm and comforting,” and another writing, “Strong value and a very elegant wine.”

San Silvestro winery in Novello has been the home base of the Sartirano family for over 150 years, and they remain a bastion of tradition: They farm organically and raise the wines only in large-format, neutral Slavonian oak. The family has their own vines but also buys fruit from farmers via contracts, as they have over multiple generations. Vineyards are tended under the watchful eye of viticultural professor Carlo Arnulfo, notable for his role in the revival of the indigenous Nascetta grape in Piedmont.

The 2018 vintage in the Langhe was not without its challenges, but the Sartiranos and their growers pulled it off beautifully, producing what Decanter described as "delicious, open-knit and approachable wines due to moderate acidity and ripe tannins. But mostly, [the 2018 vintage] is just very tasty!"

We’re buying this Barolo by the case to pop and pour with sprezzatura whenever guests arrive this year—they’ll be wowed.
