    Aussie Icon Strikes a Chord at $30

    A few months back, we found ourselves in Nashville on the same day that benchmark Australian producer Penfolds was holding a tasting in town. We texted the importer and nabbed a seat, thinking of Penfolds’ priceless Grange, the Shiraz-dominant Wine Spectator Wine of the Year that defines the pinnacle of the New World. 

    But Penfolds also delivers the highest quality in reds that many wine lovers can swing on a weeknight. And about twenty minutes into our tasting—as we chatted with the somms from Music City hotspots like Josephine, Husk, and Henley (one builds his own guitars and another is a former Rockette)—another inky red streamed into our stained glass. 

    This was the showstopper: Absolutely wild black and blue fruits of crushed blackberry, plum, blueberry, and black currant jumped out of the glass, carrying licorice and dark chocolate as well as tapenade, roast game, and savory herbs—the Mediterranean aromatics that make us salivate over the wines of Spain and the Rhône. We took a sip. The palate was fresh and vibrant, with a dense, ripe, creamy core, and a backbone of fresh acidity and polished tannins.

    All eyes zoomed to the price sheet—knowing Penfolds’ quality, everyone expected to see $50 or more. The buzz grew, and we could tell all the somms would be fighting it out for whatever bottles of the 2018 Penfolds Bin 2 Shiraz-Mataro made it to town. Meanwhile, with the importer on our iPhone, we texted under the table without missing a beat, securing our cases for Wine Access members at just $30.

    No wine shows Penfolds’ best-at-every-level commitment like Bin 2. A blend of Penfolds’ marquee Shiraz plus Mataro (the New World moniker for what the French call Mourvèdre), it’s aromatic, a bit brooding like a warm-vintage Beaucastel, and boasts the lush, ripe red fruit that has earned Aussie reds fervent fans the world over.

    So whether you love the rich reds of Australia, the Rhône, or California, Bin 2 is a straight-up steal from the winery that sets the quality standard south of the equator—and some would say in the world.
