Impossible to Find, Impossible to Believe

At 6:39pm on September 13, 2022, everyone in the dining room at The Charter Oak restaurant in St. Helena was startled by the sound of dozens of iPhones alerting in unison. By the time the diners could whip out their phones, a 4.4 earthquake was rocking the room. For ten minutes after the shaking subsided, the room buzzed with the sound of everyone making sense of what had just happened.

But not our table. We picked up right where we’d left off, deep into one of the most exciting discoveries of the year: the 2018 McHenry Hohnen Red Wine Rolling Stone Margaret River.

It took serious cojones for vintner Murray McHenry to bring his Cabernet-dominant blend to The Charter Oak: Sitting in the epicenter of California Cabernet production, Chris Kostow’s restaurant pours 2015 Diamond Creek by the glass. Priceless classics like 1984 Dominus leer up from the bottle list, but Murray’s Rolling Stone stood proud. It’s McHenry Hohnen’s top Cabernet Sauvignon, a selection of their most luscious, ageworthy barrels.

This wine comes from Hazel’s Vineyard, their southernmost site. Certified biodynamic, blessed with a northerly exposure and free-draining ironstone gravel loam soil, it is their top wine, made of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, the rest Malbec, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. The 2018 Rolling Stone, after aging for 18 months in 40% new French oak and another several years in bottle, is layered and savory, showing a beautiful New World fruit profile and stout Old World structure.

No bottle shows Margaret River’s personality and quality better than this jewel. It impressed us so much that we imported it ourselves, and we want you to experience the payoff.
