A Crystalline Beauty That Can Leave You Speechless

We wish we could pour a glass of the gorgeous 2018 Kuentz-Bas Pinot Blanc for every one of our white-wine lovers.

But in reality, there’s barely enough of this mineral flecked, under-$20 Old World stunner to meet the needs of a few MICHELIN-starred cellars, let alone wide demand. One of the great secrets of Alsace, this wine—imported by legendary tastemaker Kermit Lynch—is such a rarity in the American market that only a tiny fraction of buyers knows the brilliance and massive value offered by this bottle.

Crafted from biodynamically farmed grapes by an estate that traces its winemaking legacy to the late 1700s, and aged in barrels made in 1894, this is grand European history in a glass.

Pinot Blanc is a grape we unreservedly adore, and Kuentz-Bas makes one of the world’s most famous renditions. Think of it as an aristocratic, fine-boned cousin to Chardonnay, Riesling, or Pinot Gris. Historically, it was confused with Chardonnay to the extent that the German name for Pinot Blanc—weissburgunder—approximately translates to “white Burgundy.”

Fourteenth-generation winemaker and grower Jean-Baptise Adam cultivates these grapes at one of the highest points in Alsace, on 24 acres of vineyards that descend down sun-dappled slopes. He lees-ages the wine in 19th-century foudres that are too old to impart any wood flavor, but instead assist in the slow introduction of oxygen into the vessels, aiding the fermentation process and deepening the complexity.

We wish there were many more Pinot Blancs of this dazzling quality at such an unbelievable price. For now, this Kuentz-Bas remains one of the very rare and very best testaments to the beauty of a foundational Alsatian grape
