Another Chance at a Heavenly Sauvignon Blanc
We were in Rome, across from the Spanish Steps, when we first sipped the electrifying Giuseppe Zorzettig Sauvignon Blanc. While the tourists worked themselves into a frenzy trying to take selfies with the Trinità dei Monti in the background, we stayed cool enjoying what would go on to be one of the highest-rated, top-value Sauvignon Blancs ever delivered to Wine Access members.
On the heels of the member-favorite 2017… we welcome our second allocation of the 92-point 2018 to the States, a vibrant Sauvignon Blanc will top wines 3X the price, and has a nearly-perfect member rating to prove it.
It’s bright and elegant, racy and intense, with juicy layers of Satsuma orange, lime, and bitter lemon threaded with chamomile, white flowers, white pepper, and sage—and we can’t keep this on the shelves.
Today we’re reliving how pleasantly stunned we were by the bright and lively Zorzettig that first time in Rome. It was a dream when we drank it with bruschetta and fried artichokes, and will be unbeatable as an aperitif, or with halibut or shellfish. This is a wine that will make fans of creamy Sauvignon Blanc and Italian whites do exactly what we did: perk right up, then drink it down.
If you’ve never had Sauvignon Blanc from Friuli, or you weren’t quick enough to lock in the 2017, this is the perfect opportunity to get on board. This picture-perfect region, which Vino Italiano authors David Lynch and Joseph Bastianich say produces some of the “most complex and full-bodied whites to be found anywhere in the world,” is heaven for white grapes, and not only indigenous grapes like Friulano, Malvasia, and Pinot Grigio. International grapes like Sauvignon Blanc thrive there as well, a big reason why Friuli is always a first stop on our quest for stellar white wines.
More supple and generous with stone fruit than its counterparts from the Loire and Bordeaux, yet every bit as aromatic, sleek, and energetic, this will leave you primed for sip after sip, and then a few more. And at this price, there’s absolutely no reason to hold back.
