An Iconic Rhône Clan Unearths Killer Value

We’ve long said that, for red-wine lovers, the Southern Rhône is one of the best places you can spend your hard-earned dollar—which is why the Famille Perrin Les Cornuds Vinsobres is such a fantastic bottle. Crafted by the Perrin clan behind the legendary Château de Beaucastel, praised by Jancis Robinson’s World Atlas of Wine, it outshines its peers on just about every front.

Here’s how: Côtes-du-Rhône reds can come from a vast swath of vineyard land. Vinsobres, on the other hand, is a small, relatively high-elevation appellation in the north of the Southern Rhône—and the area is very hospitable to Syrah. Perrin’s Les Cornuds comes from one family-owned plot, where many of the vines grow on the kind of steep, terraced terrain that Syrah absolutely loves. The result is a 60-40 blend of lush Grenache and aromatic, tense Syrah that captures the best of both Rhône worlds.

The Perrins “routinely produce long-lived classics that are among the finest in the world,” according to Robert Parker—and Jean-Pierre, François, and Pierre Perrin have a deep affection for the mistral-swept terroir of Vinsobres. The cooler climate and high elevation produce a level of finesse in Syrah that’s often lost in warmer climes. Notes of violet, blackberries, and smoked meat are classic giveaways of a Vinsobres red.

Winemaker Marc Perrin told Wine Advocate that he considers 2018 “a top vintage,” marked by long and deep tannins. A damp summer caused a little anxiety but ended perfectly, resulting in fantastic bottles that are already showing as “complex, undeniably delicious, and loaded with character,” according to Dunnuck.
