“One of the Very Finest Values” in Cabernet

The 2018 Edge Cabernet is “one of the very finest values readers will find in California Cabernet” according to Vinous founder Antonio Galloni. Sourced entirely from Alexander Valley—that tenderloin of Sonoma County made famous by Silver Oak—it is bold, muscular, and a must-have for any Cabernet lover.

The man behind Edge is none other than Ray Signorello, whose other job is running his family’s eponymous estate in Napa. At Signorello, Ray works with 100-point winemaker Celia Welch (who also makes a cult icon we can’t name), and he seems to have picked up more than a few of her tricks.

Now, he’s bringing the same attention to detail to Edge that he does to his $175+ Cabernets—just at a VERY different price.

In an era when it’s hard to find good California Cab in this ballpark, we’re absolutely thrilled to be able to offer Ray’s 2018 Edge Cabernet—which boasts 93-point praise and Galloni’s glowing assessment—for a stunning price. It’s a marvelous deal for a Cab from a region dominated by huge names, and we love that Edge isn’t afraid to go toe-to-toe with those superstars on quality.

From the first pour, it’s clear that this is one serious bottle of Cabernet, prices aside. Dark purple in the glass, the nose is classic Alexander Valley, with rich cassis, deep blackberry, pipe tobacco, and cedar aromas. The palate is lush and textured, full of dark fruit accented by stony minerality and a beguiling dusty cocoa flavor, wrapping up with a long finish that keeps you coming back for more.

Edge lived up to the North Coast’s 2018 vintage, a 97-point year that, according to Vinous, produced “simply mind-blowing” wines. The Cabernet was grown on prime sources in Alexander Valley—a pocket where the warm climate and deep alluvial gravel soils concentrate the berries into thick-skinned flavor bombs—and the sites were specially selected for the quality and elegance of the tannins in their grapes.

Once the pristine bunches got to the winery, they were treated like those that go into Signorello's top wines. That means carefully managed fermentations to extract rich fruit without harshness, and 16 months of aging in expensive 50% new French oak—perfect for polishing the wine and adding a hint of exotic spice.

That’s everything we look for in a $50+ bottle, which is why Edge Cabernet tastes like a wine that carries a hefty premium. At our price, though, you can easily stock up on a case or two. Drink it whenever the mood strikes—if you’re a Cab lover, that will be pretty often.
