A Burgundy Geek’s Dream
Burgundy prices are surging, with even village wines approaching and exceeding triple-digit prices. That’s what makes finding a red Burgundy from an elite producer at this price so rare.
That’s why we worked quickly to snap up an allocation of the 2018 Thierry et Pascal Matrot Meursault Rouge for Wine Access members. From an incredible vintage that one local legend compared to the mythical 1947, it’s a spectacular opportunity for Pinot Noir lovers.
Red Meursault, you ask? Absolutely. This and Chassagne-Montrachet are two of the best places in Burgundy to go bargain-hunting for top-quality Pinot Noir. The canny Burgundians keep most of these reds for themselves, so when we see an escapee like this one, we move fast. It’s the kind of wine we’d take home in our luggage if we saw it on a shelf in Beaune.
The Matrot family have farmed these 2.3 acres organically since 2000. Wine Advocate says, “The style at this important 19-hectare domaine is pure and understated, minimal wood influence meaning that it is the grapes—and the climats that shape them—that are front and center at all times…Savvy consumers will take note of the domaine's under-the-radar wines.”
This one was grown on two plots at the bottom of the Volnay Santenots slopes, not far from the revered Santenots Premier Cru. Wines from that site can only be labeled “Volnay” if they are red—otherwise they qualify as Meursault Premier Cru, so this has much more in common with Volnay than it does with many other red Meursaults.
This is the stuff that Burgundy geeks love to talk about, as do we—almost as much as we enjoy drinking it.
