Top Value from an “Undeniably Great” Vintage

A few years back while we were travelling in Bordeaux, we sat down for dinner and put our wine choice in the waiter’s hands—and we’ve never forgotten the bottle he brought us.

A stunning red by Château Larrivet Haut-Brion, it was one of the most satisfying wines we’d ever happened upon in a French restaurant. Deep ruby-garnet in color, it was a silky textured, rich and ripe blend of Merlot and Cabernet grown in a prime spot in Pessac—close to Château Haut-Bailly and with vines bordering $148 Smith Haut Lafitte. Crafted by Bordeaux ace Stéphane Derenoncourt, it was the perfect Bordeaux find. And it barely cost more than the rare bavette steaks it accompanied.

Loving the wine was easy. Locating it wasn’t, until we mentioned the wine to an importer friend. It turns out that the wine we were looking for—Demoiselles de Larrivet Haut-Brion, the phenomenal second wine from Château Larrivet Haut-Brion—is sold in some markets under a different label.

That was the lead we needed. And today, we’ve got our wine. The 2018 Domaine de Larrivet Haut-Brion—the wine that we fell in love with under another name—is here, and we’re thrilled to share it with you.  With every sip, it flaunts the characteristic richness and dark-fruited exuberance of what Jeb Dunnuck called the “undeniably great” 2018 vintage. Derenoncourt took full advantage, translating the warm, dry growing season into a concentrated, aromatic classic that is sure to evolve in the cellar—but is seamless and so very good right now.
