One of Beaune’s Biggest Coups
Boris Champy is one of the most talked-about men in Burgundy—and one of the busiest.
We finally managed to get him on a call that ended up being short, but it was all we needed to secure one of the biggest coups in Beaune: a Pinot Noir that comes from an estate you’re going to hear A LOT about in the coming months and years.
“There is something special brewing here,” wrote Neal Martin of Vinous about Champy’s attention-grabbing namesake domaine. He went on, raving about how Boris’s work with in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune “frankly rewrote everything I thought possible. It is not exaggeration or hyperbole to say that they are equal to many Premier Crus that I tasted.”
Boris Champy’s career was a study in brilliance even before this latest venture. He spent 10 years at the iconic Napa estate Dominus before becoming technical director for Louis Latour. Afterwards he took over estate management of the Côte de Nuits property Clos de Lambrays—“one of Burgundy’s oldest and most famous Grand Crus,” according to Vinous.
In 2018, he put a plan into motion to acquire Domaine Montchovet in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, which was the first Burgundy estate to receive Demeter certification—the world’s gold standard in biodynamic farming.
Boris was Didier Montchovet’s handpicked successor, and for this vintage of Altitude, Didier consulted as Boris took the helm. The wine is blended from three high-altitude plots where the grapes grow in red clay soils and achieve a lithe muscularity. This bottle is a stellar value from a fast-rising producer, and we’re thrilled to bring it to you.
