Moulin de la Mothe Goes Back to the Future

After a cool spring that delayed budbreak, the young team that took over Château Moulin de la Mothe only a few years prior had no idea the rollercoaster of a vintage that awaited them in 2018.

Flowering was uneventful, but then June brought unrelenting showers—turning soils muddy and making tractor work nearly impossible in their vineyards. If it kept up like this, the year would quickly turn into a disaster.

Suddenly, the weather turned hot and dry and persisted through harvest, when warm winds kept the grapes free of disease and allowed them to pick at their leisure, waiting for the perfect moment of ripeness.

Their bold, finely structured 2018 is a complete vindication of the young cooperative that poured countless hours into revitalizing the vineyards. It earned 92 points from Wine Enthusiast and a gold medal from the prestigious French competition Gilbert & Gaillard.

Moulin de la Mothe is based in the prestigious Haut Médoc commune of Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne—a Left Bank hamlet that boasts star estates like Sociando-Mallet, bordered to the south by St.-Estèphe.

The young team that took charge in 2016 brought a “back to the future” attitude to the estate, which had been neglected by its previous owner. They’ve replanted extensively in the vineyard, increasing its density to 6,500 vines per hectare. That means more work, but increased competition between the vines which created smaller, more flavorful berries.

In the winery, that same attitude means a long, three-week post-fermentation maceration to extract the powerful structure and deep fruit flavors from the Merlot-dominant blend. In a warm vintage like 2018, that yields a combination of immediate succulence with a well of ageable intensity.
