Fooled in the Best Way Possible
Dollar-for-dollar, there’s no beating this under-$15 showstopper.
We first tried the cherry- and herb-laden 2017 Tor del Colle Sangiovese Riserva in a blind tasting of high-rolling Italian reds, and every member on our panel knew it was a knockout. But not one of us called the under-$15 price on this show-stealing value from Emilia-Romagna, the undersung region whose superb wines “the world is slowly waking up to,” in the words of Master of Wine Jancis Robinson.
Now is the time to jump on the extraordinary value coming from this burgeoning Northern Italian region, especially considering our first offer from Tor del Colle sold out in less than 24 hours. Today’s 2017 matches its sibling in price and pedigree, showcasing the Sangiovese grape that rules Emilia-Romagna.
This wine is ripe and ready to make massive fans out of all who take a taste!
From Robinson to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, it’s hard to find a critic who hasn’t chimed in on Emilia-Romagna’s overdelivering nature. Wine Spectator wrote that “Sangiovese-based reds from the Romagna DOC are worth seeking out.” Decanter added that “Sangiovese in Emilia-Romagna is experiencing a resurgence in quality.”
Fans of Tuscan reds will absolutely love this wine, but make no mistake, this is not Chianti. Sangiovese from Emilia-Romagna has its own unique identity, differing from its Tuscan counterpart in its softer, more fruit-forward and voluptuous nature. It retains the mouthwatering acidity that makes Sangiovese a perfect match for a piping hot bowl of pasta Bolognese and goes down so smooth you won’t be able to resist another glass.
The 2017 Tor del Colle brings nearly a century of winemaking pedigree with its bright notes of red cherry, blackberry, fennel, and spice. Casa Vinicola Botter, which handcrafts each Tor del Colle wine, was founded in 1928 by Carlo and Maria Botter and is now run by the family’s third generation.
In making the 2017 Sangiovese, the Botters fermented the grapes in stainless steel to preserve freshness and gorgeous red-fruit purity. They then aged the wine in oak for a full 12 months—a rarity for a wine at this price point—adding polish and seamlessly integrated spice.
The result is an unbeatable value, one we recommend locking in before the rest of the world catches on.
