    California Vineyard Royalty

The deep, sandy, far-flung Evangelho Vineyard sits far from the big-money epicenter of California wine, but its vines, planted in 1885, produce grapes that few vineyards in Napa or elsewhere can match. That’s why just about every old-vine master and winery in the state—from Bedrock and Turley to Ravenswood, Ridge, and Neyers—has tapped the timeless site.

But none fashions a more incredible bottle than Matt Cline of Three Wine Co.

Three Wine Co. boasts more five-star Wine Access member ratings than just about any other producer we work with, and Matt’s Evangelho Zin is one of his most treasured bottlings. It’s been well over a year since we’ve offered this flagship bottle, which is all but impossible to find.

The vines at Evangelho remain on their own roots, having withstood phylloxera because the pest cannot survive in sandy soils. Despite the dry climate, the vines have never been irrigated, and thrive by digging 40 daunting feet through alluvial sand to the water below. Because the vines and the vineyard itself have proven to be such hardy survivors, the legend of Evangelho has grown—and so has the waiting list for its grapes.

As one who recognized Evangelho’s value long ago, Matt Cline is always at the front of the line, and he’s kind enough to reserve some of every vintage of this Zin for Wine Access, and we never take his generosity for granted. Dense on the palate without feeling heavy, it's in a really great place right now, with six years of bottle development having integrated all its old-vine concentration.
