    Goliath Pedigree, David Price

Just as Russian River Valley is to Pinot Noir, Dry Creek AVA is THE brand name in American Zinfandel.

It got that way thanks to its wealth of 19th century vines, its perfect climate with a long hang time for Zin, and decades of efforts by wineries like Rafanelli, Ridge, and Seghesio. Because of this prestige, great bottles of Zinfandel from Dry Creek routinely trade for $30 or more—and $50 and up for the best examples.

That’s why Sling and Spear’s 2017 Zinfandel—made from 45-year old vines on the north end of the AVA—is such a brilliant value at our discount.

The folks behind Sling & Spear have earned a slew of critical praise, including placement on Wine & Spirits’ Best US Cabernets and Blends list. But after years of selling high-priced collector’s items, this Zinfandel showcases their prestigious vineyard sources without the prohibitive cost.

Hence the name. The wine is a ruby-hued David (Sling), standing for bottle prices that don’t zoom into the stratosphere. His foes: a host of costly Goliaths (Spear)—high-caliber wines, to be sure, but ones that can’t outmatch Sling and Spear’s incredible quality, power, and finesse.

Our VP of Wine, Eduardo Dingler, discovered this Zin at lunch with winemaker Greg Graziano at Napa’s Angèle. Over duck rillettes, steak tartare, and generous pours of this flavor-packed, sultry 2017, we locked in the exclusive on this unbelievable discount.

It’s one of the best Zinfandel deals we’ve seen in a while, and we try new ones every week. Some of Dry Creek’s top terroir, 1972-vintage head-trained vines, at this price? Our cases won’t last long.
