A Five-Star Hotel’s Loss Is Your Gain.
When we popped the cork on the 2017 Keller Estate Pinot Noir La Cruz Vineyard, all we could say was—wow.
Succulent red fruits and heady spices, all framed by savory tannins, led to an attention-grabbing mineral finish. We were hooked, but we shouldn’t have been so surprised. Not only is Keller Estate making stellar California Pinot Noir, but they also helped put the fledgling Petaluma Gap AVA on the map.
This is a gorgeous Pinot Noir layered with bright, juicy red fruit and vivid minerality. Every swirl reminded us of some of the most hauntingly beautiful Pinots we’ve enjoyed from the Central Coast and Burgundy.
Petaluma Gap’s distinguishing feature is the wind: salty, powerful breezes off the Pacific that funnel through the 15-mile wide inland valley buffet the vines, which then develop small grape clusters sporting thick skins and packed with profound flavor. Keller Estate’s La Cruz vineyard contains Pommard and Dijon clones rooted in mineral-rich clay soils, and the force of the wind challenges the grapes to ripen. Hand-harvesting takes place at night, then the grapes are destemmed, cold-soaked for five days, and aged in fine French oak.
Under the direction of Ana Keller, one of the greatest boosters of the Petaluma Gap AVA, Keller Estate has become a shooting star in the region, thanks to wines that match impeccable balance with aromatic, savory spices. The 2017 La Cruz Pinot is proof that her family’s wines stand shoulder to shoulder with the best, and we think you’ll agree.
