Côte-Rôtie by Way of Mendoza

When Alejandro Vigil first tasted a 1998 Guigal Syrah Viognier from the Côte-Rôtie’s legendary La La vineyards, he was overcome with emotion. It was that stirring experience that inspired Vigil—the 100-point winemaker at the helm of Mendoza icon Bodega Catena Zapata—to craft today’s stunning El Enemigo release.

Sourced from Gualtallary vines nearly a mile above sea level, and channeling the muscular energy of Vigil’s original encounter with the best of Northern Rhône, the 2017 El Enemigo has met  with unanimous praise from the critics: 95 points from James Suckling, who has hailed Vigil’s wines as “exceptional”; 93 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, who singled out the wine as “truly impressive” and “among the best Syrah I’ve tried from Argentina!”; and Vinous, who, describing it as “Côte-Rôtie in style,” dealt out 93 points as well, calling it “an outstanding red, to be drunk without a second thought.”

We’ve come to expect bottles of this quality and vitality from member-favorite producer El Enemigo, run by the dream duo of Alejandro Vigil and Adrianna Catena. Vigil is one of Argentina’s leading winemakers, a man whose unparalleled knowledge of terroir led Argentina’s Wine Institute to hire him as head of the soil division. Catena is a historian of early modern Spain with a PhD from Oxford—and the daughter of Nicolás Catena, the man Wine Enthusiast called the “godfather of modern Argentinean wine.”

Vigil and Catena’s talents result in outstanding wines that have given El Enemigo something of a cult following, and this 2017 Syrah Viognier shows why. Will you be overcome with emotion? Take a sip. Let us know.
