The Finest Vineyards in One Stunning Pinot Noir Bottling
The terms “hand-crafted” and “small-production” seem to be bandied about right and left these days, but it isn’t often that you encounter winery owners personally making the wine and personally doing all the unglamorous cellar work. Dragonette Cellars, and the wines they produce in Santa Barbara’s Sta. Rita Hills, are anything but ordinary.
Their 2017 Pinot Noir is a standout bottling that combines grapes from four pristine sites known for their exquisite single-vineyard wines, in a value bottling that could command twice the price. Because 2017 was a dramatically low-yielding vintage, those perfect grapes landed in this shimmering ruby Pinot which captures the verve and essence of the Central Coast in a red of incredible harmony. Thanks to our unique relationship with Dragonette (our own Master of Wine Vanessa Conlin shared a tasting group with winemaker Brandon Sparks-Gillis) we’re thrilled to be first-to-market with this stunning 2017.
Effusive black cherry and raspberry aromas leap from the glass together with a symphony of spice ranging from wild herbs and coriander to fresh violets and hints of pipe tobacco. Absolutely silken on the palate, the parade of red fruit flavors is everlasting and accented perfectly by minerality and spice courtesy of aging 100% in neutral French Oak.
Dragonette has a knack for finding the finest vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills, and their expertise shines through in this barrel-select blend. The 2017 combines grapes from the remote, mountaintop Bentrock vineyard known for plush, dark-fruit with voluminous grapes from the John Sebastiano Vineyard, herbal heritage Pinot Clones from Spear Vineyard, and spice-driven Pinot from the Fiddlestix vineyard. Hand-picked and sorted, and fermented with native yeasts and minimal intervention, winemaker Brandon along with partners John and Steve Dragonette, blended this from select barrels to yield a gorgeous snapshot of 2017. After a year in bottle, this release proves Sta. Rita Hills reputation for world-class Pinot Noir is well-deserved.
We can’t get this silken Pinot off of our minds, and when you taste it, you’ll see exactly why.
