A Pinnacle of Pinot Noir
Domaine Ponsot is one of Burgundy’s iconic producers, and the Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes is their signature bottling. Made from their oldest vines in their most prized vineyard, it’s Pinot Noir at its pinnacle—we’ve been fighting for years for our tiny allocation.
Packed with complexity beyond belief, soaring aromatics, and immense ageworthiness (vintages from the 70’s are still stunning), it’s been a reference-point bottle for collectors of Burgundy for generations—and a must-have for anyone serious about the best of Burgundy. Even better, they produced “some of the wines of the vintage” in 2017, according to the Wine Advocate.
Clos de la Roche is the crown jewel of Morey-St.-Denis five Grand Cru vineyards. Sitting on the border with Gevrey-Chambertin, on exceptionally rocky limestone-heavy soils, it provides the Ponsot family with a bottle that has dark fruit, a distinctly sauvage character, and a brightness and clarity of flavor that can be surprising the first time you try it.
Domaine Ponsot was among the first producers to estate bottle and is also one of the most meticulous in both the cellar and in the vineyard. They paid attention to clonal selection of vines long before most in the region, and many of the world’s most popular Pinot clones can trace their way to the Ponsot’s vineyards.
Farming is organic and the family is so detail-driven that no sorting table is required at the winery—anything resembling a sub-par berry is removed from the plant before picking and left in the vineyard. More importantly, that mindset carries over to every part of the winery’s operation, which is why the Ponsot wines are coveted by collectors worldwide.
