2017 VASO by Dana Estates Red Blend Napa Valley 750 ml

VASO was never meant to be sold. It was always reserved for friends and family of the winery, and the 2017 VASO Red Wine is the first-ever vintage of a wine that you will not find outside the winery. 

The 2017 VASO Red Wine represents Dana Estates at its early-drinking best. Deep ruby in color, it bursts with perfectly ripe, juicy aromas of Damson plum, currant, and loganberry, accented by complex hints of toast, violets, clove, bay leaf, vanilla, and spearmint. Rounded on the palate yet taut and energetic, it’s got layers of black fruit, mocha, and wild herbs building in savory tones as it goes. The finish is tinged with allspice, cardamom, and tobacco held firm by supple, fine-grained tannins that melt over a long finish. 

For this inaugural edition Winemaker Chris Cooney and consultant Philippe Melka focused on Dana’s Hershey Vineyard, a cool site high on Howell Mountain. The wine is composed of 40% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Malbec, and 6% Cabernet Franc, all aged for 23 months in Ermitage, Taransaud, Baron, and Demptos French oak barrels. 

Now, after nearly two years in bottle, this is the kind of gorgeous, ripe, and elegant red that has made Dana Estates a collector favorite for decades. We keep bottles of this wine stashed deep in our cellar, and some at the front ready to open at a moment’s notice.
