Start with the A-Team
Philippe Melka is the king of beautifully crafted collector’s-item Cabernets from Napa Valley. And if you want to partake in the wines he makes for Vice Versa, Roy Estate, and Fairchild, the price of admission is usually $200+.
That’s why scoring the 2017 Dalecio Cabernet was such a coup. Now six years after the vintage, this tiny-production Cabernet (just 300 cases made) is drinking beautifully, and its 95+ point score puts it with the top Melka wines of the vintage, not to mention whoppers like the $737 Hundred Acre Wraith!
Credit proprietors Scott and Kathy Dalecio for knowing exactly where to start.
When they founded their winery in 2016, they enlisted one of the most reputable and decorated winemaking duos between Calistoga and Carneros. That would be the team at Atelier Melka, headed by all-world Cabernet deity Melka and Director of Winemaking Maayan Koschitzky, who craft some of the most coveted wines in California.
Dalecio would not have its own home Rutherford vineyard for another five years, so they wisely tapped into Melka’s vineyard connections to make the 2017 vintage—and the results stand with just about anything the all-star team made that year. Aged in 75% new French oak for a generous 20 months, it’s a super-rich and broad-shouldered Cab that will stun your Cabernet-drinking friends.
