A Chianti Classico Price Tag That Says “Drink Me”

For the money, there is more pleasure and quality packed in every milliliter of Chianti Classico than any other wine region in Europe, and Canonica a Cerreto’s 2017 Chianti Classico is a prime example.

With its 92-point score—higher than their own 2017 Riserva!— it’s one that Vinous’ Antonio Galloni called “plump and juicy,” and “flashy and extroverted.”

Made by Matteo Bernabei, one of the most pedigreed winemakers in Tuscany, and hailing from the same commune that produces legends like Felsina, Castello di Bossi, and San Felice, Canonica a Cerreto’s Chianti Classico may just be our biggest Chianti steal of 2022.

While many of us have been priced out of the higher reaches of Bordeaux and Burgundy, releases like the Canonica e Cerreto Chianti Classico show that it’s still possible to experience the magic of a famous appellation’s culture and history at a true value.

Fruity and earthy on the nose, mouthfilling but not heavy, this bottling bears the signature of the highly-regarded Castelnuovo Berardenga subzone and of its maker, Matteo Bernabei, one of the foremost Sangiovese specialists in the world. The son of the famed winemaker Franco Bernabei, who helped put Selvapiana, Fontodi, and Felsina on the map, Matteo carries on his father’s legacy in impressive fashion.

A wine that James Suckling called a “big, rich Chianti Classico,” this bottle checks every box for us—and we’re sure it will for you as well.
