Rarely Does a Winery Get White-Hot This Quickly
We’ve never seen an Italian winery get hot as fast as Bertinga.
In just seven years, their whole lineup seems to have earned raves: Gambero Rosso called a bottle from their very first vintage “quite simply the best Merlot tasted this year in Italy,” awarding it Tre Bicchieri. James Suckling declared their 2019 Volta a “Masterpiece.” Guida Essenziale Vini d’Italia named them the “Best Emergent Producer” of 2022.
The estate’s meteoric rise is thanks in large part to a magic hillside terroir in Gaiole—one that was once owned by Castello di Ama and is now tended to organically by Bertinga’s diligent team. Consulting winemaker Stéphane Derenoncourt, Bordeaux’s renowned Right Bank oenology guru, also has a big hand in the thrilling wines that have made this winery an immediate contender.
We jumped at the opportunity to take our leadoff allocation the 2017 Sassi Chiusi, a blend of 85% Sangiovese and 15% Merlot from this new icon. James Suckling awarded it 93 points calling it “so beautiful…already a bright and pretty wine.”
Sassi Chiusi is Bertinga’s second wine, following closely behind their $70+ flagship, and the 2017 is a marvel. It’s redolent of black plum, redcurrants, and blackberry, with savory tones of aged tobacco, worn leather, and dusty earth speaking clearly of the Tuscan landscape with its dried herbs and licorice tones. Aged for 18 months in the cellar and another year in the bottle before release, it will continue to improve for a decade or more. Bring on the wild boar ragù with pappardelle!
