An Incredible Run of Beauty and Quality

We have a passion for finding and drinking wines that are just starting to peak, entering the best years of their lives. For us, there’s no better way to do that than to buy a case and watch it blossom over time—and dollar for dollar, today’s Aglianico is one of the finest, most rewarding Italian reds that money can buy.

The 2016 Vigneti Del Vulture Aglianico Piano Del Cerro is a Southern Italian classic that ages like a fine Barolo yet develops a bit earlier, emerging with a seductive, spicy power. It’s bold yet polished, detailed and expansive, and it’s now entering its prime plateau—kicking off what promises to be an incredible run of beauty and quality in the cellar.

This flagship bottling from a decorated Basilicata estate is crafted from a small cut of its best 70- to 80-year-old vines. It’s the winery’s noble terroir that drew famed enologist Alberto Antonini—named one of the “World’s Greatest Winemakers” by Decanter—to Vigneti del Vulture.

Basilicata is one of the most remote, isolated, and sparsely populated provinces in all of Italy, with an ancient tradition of winemaking. Visiting it is like stepping back centuries in time, according to Antonini. It’s that primal quality that has helped preserve the purity and integrity of the special terroir here: Mineral-rich volcanic soils and vineyards splayed across hillsides that reach up to 2,000 feet in elevation inform this wine’s deep, earthy complexity.

Over the next 15 years, we’ll be enjoying this Aglianico del Vulture as it sheds its youthful vigor and moves from bold, earthy intensity to tertiary splendor, and then goes on to reach a complete evolution and softening of its composure.
