This Is Why We Scour Cellars
A great go-to Cabernet has gotta be overperforming yet easy on the wallet, capable of impressing family and friends but also perfect for just kicking back and sipping by the fire.
It gets a gold star if it’s got a little age, and HUGE bonus points if the bottle’s big enough to share with a crowd.
Bottles that check all the boxes are hard to find—which is why the 2016 Trig Point Cabernet Sauvignon is such a winner.
Crafted by Wine Access friend and Simi veteran Nick Goldschmidt, this 2016 release hails from one of the greatest North Coast Cabernet vintages in history. It was grown on a prime regeneratively farmed vineyard in the Alexander Valley benchlands, cellared untouched at the winery since that fantastic season—it’s exactly what we want to share with family and friends over a great meal.
Located along the Mayacamas range running through Napa from Mt. Veeder, the Diamond Dust Vineyard boasts the same dirt as you’d find in Diamond Mountain, Spring Mountain and Mt. Veeder. Perhaps that’s why Wine & Spirits has noted that past vintages display a “rush of tannins” that are “more like those of mountain-grown fruit than benchland.” Facing southeast and situated in a bowl, the old, low-vigor vines are protected from winds, while daily fog and gravelly loam soils nurse grapes to rich, full-bodied concentration.
Give it 20 minutes (or about the time it takes for a perfectly roasted prime rib to rest) to breathe, and you’ll be greeted with ripe and supple blue and black fruit, accented by violets, sandalwood, and cocoa. The medium body is soft, with elegant tannins and juicy acidity—perfect for a sip-all-night Cabernet.
