99pt Vintage—You Can’t Own Enough 2016 Brunello

A great Brunello vintage gives twice.

First, when the wines are released to big-time fanfare and red-wine lovers finally get to cash in on years of anticipation. Then, a half-decade after harvest, when the glorious, patiently aged riservas emerge. And the 2016 Tenuta Vitanza Firma Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a profound gift from one of the finest Brunello vintages of all time.

A refresher on the 2016 season: Wine Advocate awarded it 98 points and doesn’t think there’s ever been a better year. Wine Spectator declared it a 99-pointer—their best rating ever. Vinous described the ‘16 wines as “well-muscled black stallions in their prime.”

Vitanza is a multiple Tre Bicchieri–winning estate that stands as one of our members’ favorite Brunello producers, and this ‘16 Firma Riserva is a bold powerhouse that’s just getting started. Boasting 95 points from James Suckling, it’s got voluminous aromas of dark plum, cassis, graphite, and plenty of dried herbs and spice. Lush, concentrated, and rich, it promises the glorious 2016 vintage will continue to delight you through the end of the decade.

Shielded from cold easterly winds but exposed to balmy maritime breezes from the Mediterranean to the west, Vitanza crafts big, full bodied, and dense bottlings that are still eminently approachable.

The Firma Riserva underwent a temperature-controlled fermentation, with regular pumpovers to ensure gentle yet thorough extraction. Most importantly, though, the wine aged for a full 36 months in French tonneaux and then rested for three more years before its release. That time allowed for the fierce tannins to soften and for the gorgeous dark fruit to mellow. You’ll see—this one’s worth the wait.
