“Every bottle’s first job is being delicious.”

There might be no wine more painstakingly made, patiently cellared, and passionately sought-after than Vega Sicilia’s famously difficult-to-obtain Único—and we’re thrilled to offer the newly released 2009 vintage. After a decade in the cellar, this legend has garnered double-98-point scores from James Suckling and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.

Único has also been a massive hit with the Wine Access members who claimed our last offer, and have endorsed it with 4.9 out of 5 stars (one even said it’s “among the best of the best”).

That’s because Único stands with the Bordeaux First Growths in quality, tops them in rarity (it’s only made in exceptional vintages), and when you compare it to ‘09 Médoc wines that earned similar scores—like 98-point Margaux at $1,129 and 97-point Lafite at $1,258—it’s clear that it delivers incredible value to your cellar.

This double 98-point 2009 stunner will thrive in the cellar for decades, and be great in the near term as well: James Suckling praised it as “very open-knit and approachable now.” It’s a deep, opaque ruby at the core, leading to bright magenta with a little orange at the rim. Layered and complex with tons of robust fruit power interacting beautifully with dried herbs and tobacco, this a long-living, long-finishing wine to savor.

The 2009 is sure to be one of the last Únicos of its kind, because Vega Sicilia changed their production methods in 2010. Until then, Único was fermented in 40,000-liter vats. Now the winery has 8,000-liter vats, which means that Único can be made in smaller batches, and will likely be made in more vintages.

Made from 94% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Único is sourced from low-yielding, 60-65-year-old vines. It spent six years in wood before being bottled in 2015, then another four years in bottle before its release just this year. In his 98-point review, James Suckling was effusive about the wine’s “natural freshness and effortless power,” calling those traits “a hallmark of Único!” This is a world-class icon that is notoriously hard to get—the British Embassy once tried to secure enough Único for a royal dinner for Queen Elizabeth II herself, but she was granted just four cases from the winery. We’re proud to present it to you today. We know it’ll be a showpiece of your cellar.
