Napa’s Hottest Neighborhood Delivers the Freshest Cabernet

Napa’s Hottest Neighborhood Delivers the Freshest Cabernet

Porter Family Vineyards may not be a household name yet, but their pristine vineyard is surrounded by Napa Valley knockout-wines including Meteor, Realm, Relic, Viader, Newton, Merryvale, and Ancien in Coombsville, a “hotbed of critical attention,” according to Wine Enthusiast and a “source of excellent Cabernets,” in the words of James Laube for Wine Spectator. Let the 2016 Irreverence be your welcome to the neighborhood.

The star-studded and point-loaded list of greats relying on Coombsville Cabernet goes on at prices deep into three digits, well above the $35 we are able to exclusively offer on 2016 Irreverence. Today’s offer is a chance at this terroir for a fraction of the standard price.

Coombsville is Napa Valley’s newest AVA, nestled at the foot of Napa Valley in the shadow of an ancient volcano that looms over the area’s famed Cabernet Sauvignon. The coolest sub-zone of Napa, Coombsville has long been home to greatness, adding elegance and balance to heavy-hitting wines from hotter appellations, and this 2016 Porter Family Irreverence Cabernet Sauvignon Vintners Reserve Napa Valley has us saying you have to taste this—winemaker Ken Bernards has sculpted a wine of power and incredible freshness here, where intoxicating lilac and fresh red roses dominate the nose, giving way to sleek, red-berry across the palate, bolstered by plush, smooth tannins, and a generous finish.

Bernards heads up the winemaking team at Porter—a veteran of Domaine Carneros and Truchard, and founder of Ancien, he caught Robert Parker’s eye in the early aughts, when the venerable critic noted that Bernards was making “complex, elegant wines that merit attention.”

This Irreverence is a Coombsville-style classic Cabernet, recognizable by peak Napa Valley richness balanced with high-toned, concentrated fruit that enjoys long hang time thanks to the cooling forces of the San Pablo Bay. It is a wine that wholly merits your attention.

Add to all that the raves coming in about the 2016s from Napa. Our own tastings have confirmed as much for months now, and the critics are finally catching up: Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, the editor-in-chief of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, called 2016 aremarkable year in Napa Valley, and we think it’s on pace to beat out 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015! We’re going out on a limb here, saying it may be the greatest vintage for Napa in over 40 years.
