One of Tuscany’s Finest Values

One of Tuscany’s Finest Values

Normally, price and quality are relative, but Podere Sapaio defies logic by dramatically overdelivering on its humble price. Overflowing with robust flavors of black currants, blueberries, and crushed savory herbs, this bottle challenges reason.

Just-released, this Podere Sapaio Volpolo Bolgheri follows on the heels of the 2015 vintage which was named to Robert Parker’s list of “6 Top-Rated Italian Wines Under $25.” When the reviews for the 2016 come in, you can bet it will be back on that list. James Suckling has already hailed this release for its “very fresh and enticing nose,” “polished tannins punctuated by vibrant acidity,” and “long and taut,” finish, stamping his high praise with a 94-point seal of approval.

Incredibly, high scores and low prices are the norm at Podere Sapaio, which specializes in Bordeaux varieties grown in sun-kissed Tuscany. Owner Massimo Piccin has been making stellar wines from 60 windswept acres of Bolgheri’s clay-loam soils since 1999. His deep commitment to the land is unwavering, as is his commitment to value. While neighboring wines like Ornellaia and Sassicaia will set you back hundreds, Podere Sapaio’s Volpolo is the underdog, the overachiever that stands out for its incredible price to quality ratio.

As Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate wrote about these offerings, “They almost always hit that enviable sweet spot that sees good winemaking happily married to territory-driven personality.”

The 2016 Podere Sapaio Volpolo certainly hits that mark, seamlessly blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, aged for 14 months in barriques and six months in bottle. The result is gorgeously complex and aromatic, with floral notes layered with fresh blue fruit and herbs—the perfect accompaniment to a generous plate of prosciutto di Parma and burrata, lightly drizzled with extra virgin olive oil.

Uncork and enjoy.
