This Napa Cab Has It All

Antonio Galloni called the gorgeous 2016 Kelly Fleming Cabernet—which was crafted in a near-perfect vintage by Marcassin alum Rebecca George and 2017 SF Chronicle Winemaker of the Year Francoise Peschon (Vine Hill Ranch) —“a towering, statuesque wine,” and “powerful, dense and explosive, with tremendous energy and sheer power.”

No wonder it earned the same 97+ point score as 2016 bottles from Colgin, Bond, Kinsman Eades, and MacDonald—all of which go for over $600!

Take a look at the estate and the team behind this wine, and there’s no mystery about why it stands with Napa Valley’s best. Winemaker Rebecca George works with Françoise Peschon (whose 2016 Vine Hill Ranch Cabernet, we should mention, scored 100). The vineyards are tended by Mike Wolf, who has laid hands on the most precious vines in Napa Valley—and knew the moment he saw it that the Fleming site would make a unique Cabernet.

Though the property is a sprawling 300 acres, the Kelly Fleming vineyard is tiny: just 12 acres. The vines, now a quarter-century old, bask in the up-valley heat until the temperature drops precipitously at night—the diurnal swing can be as much as 50 degrees. The result is wine of superb ripeness, structure, elegance, and balance.

Kelly Fleming is not a huge operation: They make just three wines, totaling less than 2,000 cases. This 2016 Cabernet hails from one of the greatest Napa vintages in recent memory. It was aged in 75% new French oak (and 25% neutral) for 20 months, before being bottled in June of 2018. It has cooled its heels in the Fleming cellars until now. It’ll be gorgeous tonight and into the 2030s.
