Janzen’s Three-Decade Beckstoffer Bond
When Claus Janzen founded his own wine label in 1993, Caymus’s Chuck Wagner helped him secure fruit by calling a grower he knew—one by the name of Andy Beckstoffer. That was the beginning of a long relationship between Janzen and Beckstoffer, one that is represented beautifully in the 2016 Janzen Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Vineyard Napa Valley.
Anchored around a densely concentrated core of black fruit, it shows loads of warm black currant, crushed blackberry, and black cherry. The nose boasts notes of Oscuro pipe tobacco, new leather, black licorice, bay leaf, and a kiss of smoke, and gains tons of volume after being decanted, becoming more revealing and supple with time. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate gave it 97-99 points, and Jeb Dunnuck awarded it 98, calling it “a brilliant wine on all accounts.”
