Harvest Time Is Deal Time
By any measure, Faustini’s 2016 Cabernet easily merits its $145 winery price.
Start with the vintage: 2016 is one of those years in Napa that is going down in wine lovers' folklore—think 1982 in Bordeaux or 2005 in Burgundy. Wine Spectator thought it was the best vintage since the legendary 1997, and it earned Napa’s highest-ever score on Wine Advocate’s vintage chart. It’s been seven years since that fantastic season, and this Faustini Cab has had time to blossom in bottle. It’s absolutely singing now.
The biggest story, by far, is the vineyard. The site behind this wine is THE most famous site on the south side of St. Helena, and a source for DOZENS of 100-point wines. Because the farmer behind it is famously litigious about his mark, we cannot reveal its name. This gravelly, alluvial site is famed for its intense black fruit, and it also brings velvety tannins and dark color to the blend.
Add to that mixture a star winemaker: Kian Tavakoli, who honed his craft as the enologist for Opus One, before heading historic Clos du Val’s vaunted Cabernet program. These days the 30-year industry-veteran is a coveted consultant, who has a host of high-dollar wineries paying for his services.
But despite the immense pedigree in the bottle, Faustini is much like other wineries in Napa: They have harvest coming up and need cash on hand—so our members got a GIANT deal. Lovers of the Valley’s finest reds, rejoice.
