A Spectacular Rhône Deal That’ll Be Gone With the Wind

In the 2016 vintage that Rhône expert Jeb Dunnuck described as “heavenly” and “on another level,” the quality of this no-holds-barred gem skyrocketed, while the value remained the same—at least for Wine Access members. Rasteau isn’t considered the heavyweight of the South for nothing, releasing wild titans like this one packed with garrigue and bold fruit—all the sweep of a Victor Hugo epic in a glass.

Just 84 cases will have to satisfy our members—an “elegant yet bold” release that achieved Editors’ Choice honors and 93 points from Wine Enthusiast, but costs just $19. That’s 46% off a critical darling that Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate called “a terrific value” and that Vinous described as “oh, so drinkable.”

The usual list price of $35 puts it in the category of entry-level Châteauneuf-du-Pape. But you’ll get 100% estate-grown fruit—juicy black raspberry and dark cherry fruit laced with game, peppercorn, licorice, and clove spice—for far, far less, if you manage to tap our TINY allocation before others descend.

Rasteau is a hilltop village located 15 miles northeast of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Here, south-facing slopes, poor soils, and old-vine Grenache produce wines “characterized by profound ripeness and intensity” according to Wine Enthusiast.

Families like the Roux clan, behind Domaine Notre Dame des Pallières, have been here for generations. Claude Roux and his cousin Jean-Pierre can trace the history of their domaine—named in the Middle Ages—all the way back into the 900s. Their vineyards today comprise 160 acres, including a family plot at the top of a hill between the Aygues and Ouvèze valleys that produced this Les Ribes cuvée.

A consistently high concentration of red clay across Rasteau lends the body and natural heft to the wines, but the soils in this vineyard, marked by brown marl and covered with pebbles, stress the vines, leading to the heady concentration and structure that are unmissable here.

Old-school vinification still rules the day at Domaine Notre Dame des Pallières, giving this bottling a rustic spicy warmth that we always want on hand in our cellar. Just $19 will fetch all that, if you’re quick.
