The Quiet Standout of St.Émilion
Clos Fourtet has quietly become one of the top performers in all of Bordeaux, and in 2016, they hit a new high. Boasting 97-point ratings from James Suckling, Antonio Galloni at Vinous, and Jeb Dunnuck, this broad, muscular Merlot-based blend wowed us with its aromas of black currants and cherries, wild herbs, mocha, and tobacco, and rich flavors of cassis, black plum, spice, and freshly tilled earth.
At $155, it costs a fraction of other top-tier 2016 Right Bank reds. Château Ausone, which is also perched on a plateau just outside the city of St. Émilion costs over $800.
Then again, Clos Fourtet has always been content to fly under the radar. They’ve bucked the Bordeaux trend of building flashy wineries and castle-like châteaux, and instead put their efforts into producing wines that the critics adore. Antonio Galloni called the 2016 “vivid, explosive and simply captivating,” and Jeb Dunnuck dubbed it “one of the gems in the vintage.”
Their limestone-rich soils—which impart a distinctively fresh mineral character—grow grapes of remarkable freshness. All of the farming treatments are organic and biodynamic. In the winery, individual stainless steel tanks are reserved for each plot, which allows the winemaking team to bring out the unique character of every single part of their land.
The result is a wine that vintage after vintage ranks as among the best in Bordeaux. The 2016 embodies everything that makes Clos Fourtet so impressive.
