History-Making Mouton Rothschild
Even for one of Bordeaux’s most storied estates, the 2016 Mouton Rothschild is special.
It’s not merely that Wine Advocate, Jeb Dunnuck, Antonio Galloni, and James Suckling all awarded it perfect 100-point scores. It’s that 2016 was a history-making vintage in Bordeaux—one that will take its place among classics like 1961, 1982, and 1986—and no wine produced that year was better than this one. It ranks among the greatest Bordeaux of all time, and the most collectible Mouton Rothschilds ever.
Jeb Dunnuck concluded: “The 2016 Château Mouton Rothschild is the wine of the vintage from the Médoc and is a truly profound, magical, blockbuster wine in every sense.” There is simply no debate that the vintage has ascended to the highest level of Bordeaux excellence, and that Mouton leads the pack.
Winemaker Philippe Dhalluin—in 2020, named James Suckling’s Winemaker of the Decade—assembled a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. The result is a masterpiece that will only improve with age. Dunnuck offered a drinking window that stretches until 2098!
Mouton is unique in that, since 1945, the château has commissioned a renowned artist to paint each vintage label: Chagall, Picasso, Dalí, Koons, Hockney, and even Prince Charles have contributed their talents to Mouton’s special tradition.
The 2016 label is a classic, designed by legendary painter, sculptor, and video artist William Kentridge. Titled “The Triumphs of Bacchus,” the label conveys both the joy offered by wine as well as its cultural power and importance. It’s an apt choice for a bottle that will go down among the greatest in history.
