A Top Bordelaise Winemaker’s Under $25 Surprise
We knew that dinner at Lard et Bouchon in St.-Émilion was going to be stellar. The name, after all, loosely translates to “bacon and cork,” two of our favorite things. But we didn’t know we’d be discovering our next favorite thing, the silken, aromatic 2016 Château Lafont-Fourcat À Nos Amours Bordeaux.
We were so impressed by the wine’s cashmere-smooth mouthfeel and symphony of ripe fruit, spice, and smooth tannins that we did a double-take: Wine this complex, that’s under $25 a bottle, needed to be offered to our members tout de suite.
But we weren’t the only ones impressed by this classic Bordeaux blend, which has proven a winner with French natives like Jean-Luc Thunevin (distributor extraordinaire and renowned owner of Wine Access member favorite Château Valandraud) and international critics alike. James Suckling loved its notes of “wet stones and black truffle…as well as ripe dark-plum and berry aromas, leading to a smooth and succulent palate that has superb polish and poise.” He summed it up simply in his 93-point rave by calling it a “great wine.”
We agree. And for the price, we’d also call it one of the best values you’ll find from the most famous region in France.
Alongside the restaurant’s signature duck and foie gras, the Lafont-Fourcat was even better than Suckling suggested. Perfumed hints of violets and elderflower combine with fresh blackberry, plum, clove, and allspice on the palate. Balanced by velvety soft tannin and spice, it is a showstopper.
Balance is the signature of winemaker Paul-Marie Mondotte, the legendary Bordeaux consultant who is the unlikely mastermind behind this stunning value red. Mondotte made his name sculpting top wines at Château Ausone, Mondotte, and d’Yquem and has managed to infuse this $25 red with the elegance and balance that are his calling cards in wines ten times the price.
Crafted from older vines grown on 19 acres in the Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux, this bottling rarely sees our side of the Atlantic. The name means “To our loves” and is Mondotte’s love letter to classic Bordeaux wines, melding fruit, spice, and the region’s signature minerality in equal measure.
Whether you open it with your own foie gras feast or a simple dinner of coq-au-vin, this is one Bordeaux that won’t disappoint.
