A Gold-Mine Deal on Left-Bank Bordeaux

Thanks to economies of scale and multigenerational savoir faire, certain red Bordeaux can represent some of the best values in the world. That’s why, when we find a claret like the gobsmacking 2016 Château de Panigon Médoc, we scoop up every last bottle we can find.

It’s made under the watchful eye of Eric Boissenot—who consults for FOUR out of the FIVE First Growth properties—and boasts Wine Enthusiast Editors’ Choice honors PLUS a 95-point score from the Decanter Asia Wine Awards.

The 2016 season on the Left Bank was marked by a very rainy spring and a dry summer, and the vines responded splendidly. Decanter rated the vintage 97 points, Antonio Galloni of Vinous called it “epic” and “fabulous,” and the spoils went to wines all along the price spectrum. This bottle is proof, and with several years under its belt, it’s primed to please right now—no need to wait years for stiff tannins to lose their bite.

Located in the village of Civrac-en-Médoc, this wine’s Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot vines sit in a cool microclimate created by the overlapping influences of the Atlantic and the Gironde Estuary. After spending 12 months in 33% new French oak, the finished wine displays trademark Médoc elegance and provides ample proof of the incredible heights value Bordeaux can achieve.

This might be an “everyday” bottle of Bordeaux, but it’s the kind that will transport you to a Parisian cafe overlooking Canal St. Martin.
