Legendary Vintage, Legendary Producer
Wine Advocate doesn’t think there’s been a better year in Rioja than 2016. We agree, and see Gran Reservas from the vintage as some of the biggest no-brainer buys out there.
This comes from one of the biggest blue-chip names in Rioja. Bodegas LAN is a legend in the region, known for innovation and obsessive quality control. Established in 1972, they’ve built an impressive reputation by combining traditional methods with innovative techniques, particularly in the aging process.
Named after the initials of the three provinces that make up the Rioja wine region: Logroño, Álava, and Navarra, Bodegas LAN is well known for their use of hybrid barrels in which both American and French oak staves are used, rather than using each type of oak individually and blending later. It’s a more expensive route, but they’ve proven that it’s worth it.
The 2016 Gran Reserva is sourced from vineyards in Haro, Villalba, and Foncea—prime locations in the coveted Rioja Alta sub-region. These vineyards are known for their low-yield, 40-year-old bush vines, which produce grapes of exceptional concentration. The diversity of soils, including clay-limestone and stony soils, builds tremendous complexity into the bottle.
LAN’s 2016 Gran Reserva is a blend of 97% Tempranillo and 3% Mazuelo, sourced from vines over 40 years old. Aged for 28 months in hybrid American and French oak barrels and an additional 36 months in the bottle, this Gran Reserva showcases the balance between tradition and modernity that defines Bodegas LAN's winemaking approach.
