Two phenomenal vineyard sources in Hudson and Stagecoach.
A blue-chip consulting winemaker in Aaron Pott.
A Wine Advocate 98-point vintage of 2016, and finally, rarity: With just 100 cases made, it offers true bragging rights for Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon lovers.
In quality and rarity, 2016 Blackbird Cabernet Sauvignon Blackmail Napa Valley is the kind of Cab we’d expect to go for a pretty penny at Premiere Napa Valley, where wineries auction tiny one-off cuvées to deep-pocketed collectors.
But this four-barrel bottling, made from a selection of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon lots in Blackbird cellars in 2016, bypassed the auction circuit and went straight to the winery’s mailing list.
However, because of Wine Access’ longtime support of Blackbird and our friendship with their GM, we secured a tiny allocation of this superb Cab!
It’s hard to imagine a more qualified consulting winemaker than Aaron Pott. Between the degrees from UC Davis and University of Burgundy, the early work with John Kongsgaard, the years at Saint-Émilion Grands Crus Troplong Mondot and La Tour Figeac, and the long list of consulting clients, he’s one of the most admired craftsmen in the Valley.
And in Pott and Mizuno’s hands, the bold, legendary Stagecoach Vineyard, in the eastern hills above Oakville, and Lee Hudson’s expertly planted and farmed vineyard in Carneros that Arietta fans know and love.
All these factors add up to make this wine a fine value at $100. And it’s so fruit-driven, perfumed, and perfectly-put-together that the $55 per bottle six-pack price catapults it into the realm of exceptional value. Buff the Zaltos and bring on the wagyu ribeye caps!
