2015 Seifried “Old Coach Road”: Stunning Judges at a Stunning Price

Most who travel to the South Island of New Zealand do so for the swimming, windsurfing, and kayaking. Summer days in the seaside paradise of Nelson feature bright sunshine and turquoise skies, even as the mercury barely touches 80 degrees. At night, we pull out the hotel’s down comforters and wool blankets as temps dip into the mid-40s.

That dramatic diurnal temperature shift is much appreciated by the tourists — but even more so by the region’s winegrowers. Seifried Estate’s founder and viticulturist, Hermann Seifried, said the ideal conditions enabled his team to “cruise into vintage, and wait for the desired balance of fruit ripeness and that sought-after acidity.” Reflecting his family’s commitment to preserving natural fruit flavors, the Seifried patriarch called Old Coach Road “an expression of everything we love about New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc,” calling out the “brightness,” “exuberance,” and “intensity” that balance beautifully in the glass.

In June, the 36th annual San Francisco International Wine Competition brought 4,600 wines before a panel of the most discriminating judges. Seifried Estate’s 2015 Old Coach Road Sauvignon Blanc stunned the experts, becoming the first from Nelson to bring home the “Best Sauvignon Blanc” title, earning 98 points and the coveted Double Gold medal.
