A Standout Burgundy in a Standout Vintage

A Standout Burgundy in a Standout Vintage

By all accounts, the brilliant 2015 vintage in Burgundy presented a rising-tide-lifts-all-boats growing season that critics are calling one of the best in decades — rivaling the heralded 2010 and 2005 vintages. One of our favorite discoveries among the 2015 Burgundies is the Premier Cru Givry “Champ Lalot” from Domaine Michel Sarrazin et Fils.

In 2010, a portion of vines in the Champ Lalot vineyard just north of the village of Givry were upgraded to Premier Cru status, which, for the owner of an Airbus, for example, would equate to upgrading the entire plane with First Class seats.

From the famous clay-rich, limestone soils in Givry, beautiful Pinot Noir grapes from vines over 30 years of age were hand-harvested, fermented by local native yeasts, and aged in oak, before bottling unfined and unfiltered.

One of the world’s foremost Burgundy critics, Stephen Tanzer, said, “(I)n terms of their consistent quality and broad appeal, 2015 will be a difficult vintage to top.” As the years prove him right, you’ll thank us for suggesting you lock into at least six bottles.
