Rolland’s Iconic Fruit Sources and Serious Track Record
Napa Cabernet lovers are getting their day in the sun here on Wine Access. We’ve had a recent string of remarkable offerings from Larkmead, Dalla Valle, winery-only Beaulieu Vineyard reds, and today’s 2015 Michel Rolland MR Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley is yet another prized possession destined for the front doorstep of only a few (and only the fastest) among you.
With an average Wine Access rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars for three previous vintages, in 2015 superstar winemaker Michel Rolland produced only four barrels of his flagship MR Cabernet and it is poised to top them all. This 100% Cabernet earned a 96+ point rating from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, which found it “a very well-crafted and harmonious beauty.” Parker’s longtime critic Jeb Dunnuck offered his own 96-point ode calling it a “Bordeaux’esque beauty,” that is “full-bodied, opulent and layered.”
Little wonder, given the vineyard sources: To Kalon, Missouri Hopper, Beckstoffer Dr. Crane, and Stagecoach, which make this wine an insane value compared to its peers. Aromas and flavors of blackberry, crème-de-cassis, fine dark chocolate, espresso bean, and mint are supported by a silky, creamy, lush wine with the kind of million-dollar-tannin texture and structure that will see bottles lasting well into the next several decades.
Opening a bottle of Michel Rolland’s own Napa Cabernet Sauvignon comes with a certain level of anticipation. After all, this is the winemaker who steered to greatness Bordeaux châteaux such as Angélus, Ausone, Pavie, and Pontet-Canet, as well as iconic Napa estates such as Bond, Bryant Family, Harlan, and Staglin. Together with 100-point winemaker Jean Hoefliger of Alpha Omega, he’s crafted a fine addition to the Napa pantheon of icon wines.
Ready to be enjoyed now, or as Parker says, will reward with “5-7 years of cellaring,” and “a further 15-20 years thereafter.” So pull a few corks this holiday season and next, and put a few in the cellar to experience the evolution of extremely fine, serious, collector-worthy Napa Cabernet.
